Every year, we launch a survey to find out what’s hot [and what’s not] in the world of programming. This time, we decided to do things differently and bring you the results faster than ever. Therefore, we’re doing a series of polls to find out what technologies are relevant to you in 2019.
We kicked off the new year with a poll about the programming languages that will be relevant to you in 2019 and learned that Dart was voted the number one language in your 2019 list with a total of 223 votes, followed by Python with 174 votes. JavaScript occupied the third position with 95 votes and Kotlin barely made it to the top 10 with 54 votes.
Now it’s time to put the spotlight on Java and take a closer look at its ecosystem. Today, we’re looking at the Java frameworks that you have used extensively in 2018 or, if you are new to this scene, the ones you plan to use this year.
Spring Boot is developers’ darling and the result of this poll reflects just that: 51 percent of the respondents have been using and/or plan to use this framework in 2019. So far, no surprises. It is [naturally] followed by Spring, which gathered 30 votes. Not too shabby!
What’s more interesting than the winning duo is that the next three names have gathered 12, 11 and 11 votes, respectively. The frameworks that made it to the Top 5 are Vaadin, Vert.x and Hibernate. We cannot say we’re surprised that Vaadin occupies the third position since the article on Vaadin 10 gathered a lot of clicks last year. Eclipse Vert.x, the tool-kit for building reactive applications on the JVM gathered 11 votes and Hibernate convinced the same number of people to give it a shout-out.
Play and Apache Spark made it to the Top 10 but they only managed to gather eight votes each. We expected to see a bigger interest in the latter but it seems that this framework has lost its spark (pun intended).
Then again, this poll had 239 respondents so take it with a grain of salt. Still, it’s interesting to see what some readers are interested in this year so for all those who participated in our poll, thank you!
