The Defense Department has hired a special assistant focused exclusively on software acquisition.
Jeff Boleng will work under Ellen Lord, undersecretary of Defense for acquisition and sustainment, according to a news release.
“Boleng will formulate the Department’s software acquisition strategy, advise Department leadership on latest best practices in commercial software development, support the enterprise to build a team of top-tier software engineers, and work to develop modern software skills in the acquisition workforce,” the Pentagon said. Boleng will be part of Lord’s executive leadership team.
His first day is Monday, and he will spend much of his time on the software aspects of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet, Lord said.
Prior to his new role at the Pentagon, Boleng has served as the acting chief technology officer and deputy chief technology officer of the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. He also spent more than 21 years in the Air Force as a cyberspace operations officer and software engineer.
